Renault Twingo city car

Renault has confirmed it will introduce the third generation of its Twingo city car at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Called internally as "Edison", the new Twingo's overall design will be heavily inspired by the Twin'Run and the Twin'Z concepts but it will be exclusively offered as a five-door hatchback, marking a first in the nameplate's history. The car will be shorter than the current 141-inch long second-gen Twingo in spite of its extra set of doors.

The new Twingo will share its platform with the upcoming SMART forfour, making it the first rear-engined Renault since the R8 was phased out in 1973. Insider at Renault previously hinted the car will exclusively be available with a 90-hp gasoline-burning 0.9-liter three-cylinder engine lifted from the Clio parts bin. The engine will be tilted at a 20-degree angle in order to fit under the floor and free up a sizable amount of space inside the car.

Renault's diesel-burning dCi mill will not be part of the lineup because it won't fit behind the car's rear axle.

Nearly every part of the next-gen Twingo's interior will be customizable in order to appeal to a trendy target audience. The car will be positioned higher up on the market than it currently is to compete against popular city cars like the Fiat 500.

Official details about Renault's next Twingo are likely to emerge in the coming weeks. After the world premiere in Geneva, the car will go on sale next summer.
