2004 Saleen Mustang S281-E ..Yes Auto
At the heart of the S281-E is a unique Saleen-manufactured 4.6-liter
powerplant built in-house. The 281 cubic-inch V8 uses a special forged
steel Saleen crankshaft, Saleen forged-steel connecting rods,
Saleen-patented forged aluminum pistons and unique Saleen aluminum
cylinder heads featuring special valve springs and the latest Saleen
performance camshafts. An 11-in. aluminum flywheel/clutch disc assembly
transfers power to the 6-speed transmission by way of a custom balanced
driveshaft. In addition to the increased rpm available with the “E”
engine, a Saleen Series V twin-screw intercooled supercharger is
installed. The power this engine produces is a mindboggling 445 bhp at
6,000, with maximum torque of 450 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, up 20 bhp and 10
lb-ft torque from the initial figures. To handle the V8’s horsepower and
torque, the E is fitted with slotted, 2-piece, 14-in. front brake
rotors. The engine is coupled with the company’s S281-E 6-speed
transmission and 3.55:1 final-drive gearing.
