2016 Audi R8

The second generation Audi R8 makes its appearance, and the theme is evolution, not revolution. In spite of a complete redesign, the new R8 is very similar in overall appearance to the old one. The new R8 is less curvacious, and more taut and angular. The influence of the new Audi TT is apparent.
Two V10 engines are available for the new R8, with a V8 and possibly a V6 to follow down the road. The base V10 produces 540 hp and 398 lb-ft. The V10 plus is the same size at 5.2 liters, but produces 610. Both engines feature additional indirect injection, as well as Cylinder on Demand. One of the two cylinder banks is shut down when all of that power is not needed, with the result of improved fuel efficiency.
The new R8 will share its chasssis with the Lamborghini Huracan, and this upgrade allows a weight savings of up to 110 lbs over the first generation R8. Heavy use of aluminum and CFRP, or carbon fiber reinforced plastic, allows for not only a weight reduction, but a 40% increase in rigidity. The outer skin is aluminum, with optional parts such as the front splitter, the diffuser, and the side blades available in clear coated carbon fiber.
The standard rims are 19 inch, but for the first time Audi will be offering 20 inch wheels. With the latter option, the Audi sports 245/30 tires up front and 305/30 tires in the rear.
