The Renault R17 is a classic concept done right

Bringing old car designs back with a modern twist is nothing new. Automakers love nostalgia as much as the rest of us, and sometimes that translates into cool modified concepts that we wish were real. The Renault R17 is one of those cars. Unveiled today, it takes an iconic concept, electrifies it, and wraps it in a stunning reimagining of classic 1970s design.

Renault teamed up with French designer Ora Ito on the car, which features a carbon body and some incredibly good proportions. The car takes its design cues from the Renault 17, a hatchback the automaker sold from 1971 to 1979.

The rectangular LED headlights blend into the front fascia, while the simple LED taillight strip flows the entire width of the car to complement the car’s clean lines. The R17’s bulging fenders enhance its appearance, giving it a sportier look than the original Renault 17, and subtle vents add a bit of elegance.

Inside, Ora Ïto used materials and fabrics that echo the 1970s to create a contemporary cabin enhanced by four rectangular screens behind the rectangular steering wheel, while the central screen is placed horizontally below the dashboard like an old-school car radio.

Although it packs a 270-horsepower electric motor and can travel 249 miles on a single charge, Renault has no plans to put the concept into production. The car will remain a one-off that the automaker will showcase at several upcoming events, including the 2024 Paris Motor Show in October. But if Hyundai can change its mind about the N Vision 74, perhaps Renault can do the same.
