2022 GMC Hummer EV

The Hummer has returned, and this time it’s branded as a GMC and it’s got an electric powertrain. The full-sized pick-up is boasting huge amounts of power and torque, a removable top and large price tag to match.

Now let’s address the marketing spin on the giant torque figure GMC have been quoting for the Hummer EV. 11,500 lb-ft of torque is an incredible amount when compared to what we see with other road cars. However that number is the combined total torque being applied to the wheels, and not the usual figure at the output shafts. Chief engineer Al Oppenheiser has stated the torque output of each individual motor as between 380 to 400 lb-ft, now if we say it’s in the middle at 390 lb-ft, when multiplied by 3 we get a more realistic total torque output of 1,170 lb-ft.

The three permanent-magnet motors are divided up with two in the rear and one up front. When combined the total power output is 1,000 hp, which propels the Hummer from 0-60 mph in just 3.0 seconds flat, certainly a mighty effort considering the considerable weight involved. The battery size is not yet known but is an 800V system capable of up to 350 kW fast charging, which will deliver 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Total range is being quoted at 350 miles by GMC.
